The State of São Paulo renders the use of face masks mandatory and general under penalty of fine and potential detention in case of noncompliance

Published on 5 May, 2020, Decree nº 64.959 determines that the use of face masks is mandatory in the State of São Paulo while the COVID-19 pandemic lasts. The Governor of the State of São Paulo decreed the obligation to wear masks in (i) spaces open to the general public, (ii) establishments performing essential activities and (iii) State public agencies. In the event of noncompliance, the individual may receive a fine or face potential detention under articles 268 or 330 of the Criminal Code.
