Ambassador Sergio Amaral rejoins Felsberg Advogados

Upon returning from Washington, where he served as Ambassador of Brazil to the United States, Sergio Amaral is rejoining Felsberg Advogados as a counselor. Ambassador Amaral, who received a law degree at the University of São Paulo and a post-graduate degree from the University of Paris I (Panthéon Sorbonne), was also Ambassador of Brazil to the United Kingdom and France.

Ambassador Amaral has served at high level positions in the Brazilian government, including as Secretary of Social Communication and Spokesman for President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Executive Secretary to the Ministry for the Environment, and Chairman of the Foreign Trade Council of Ministers (CAMEX) and the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES).

His extensive biography includes serving as Chairman of the Brazil-China Business Council and member of the Strategic Council of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP). He was also a member of the Board of Directors of AES Eletropaulo and Tietê as well as of the International Board of prominent French companies Total and Plastic Omnium.

Thomas Benes Felsberg, founding partner of Felsberg Advogados and the first Latin American recipient of the Global Restructuring Review lifetime achievement award, for his work in insolvency and restructuring with respect to companies in Brazil and abroad, says that Ambassador Amaral joins the firm at an opportune time and will be invaluable in the firm’s agenda of expanding its cross-border work and roster of clients. In particular, he expects that Ambassador Amaral will be an immense boost to the firm’s Asian and European desks, created to advise Asian and European companies in Brazil as well as Brazilian companies with relationships in these regions, and to the firm’s traditional ties to companies in North America.

Ambassador Amaral expressed his delight at joining a team “that is extremely proficient, highly energized and, above all, looking ahead to the future”.
