Profile

Fernando de Mello Barreto is an ambassador, career diplomat, jurist, and academic. With more than four decades of experience in Brazilian diplomacy, and extensive expertise in trade policy and engagement with multilateral organizations, he possesses broad expertise in complex negotiations involving international trade, tariffs, and strategic agreements, such as Mercosur and the European Union, contributing a highly qualified perspective on international developments relevant to the Brazilian regulatory environment.

Experience

  • He has a distinguished career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, having served in several positions abroad, including as Brazil’s Ambassador to Australia and Russia, as well as consul general in London, Boston, and Hartford. He also served at the embassies in Madrid, Quito, and Ottawa. 
  • He served as Brazil’s delegate to international multilateral organizations, including the United Nations (UN), in New York, and the World Trade Organization (WTO), in Geneva. 
  • Extensive experience in international negotiations, and deep knowledge of global trade agreements and regimes, including tariffs and strategic agreements, such as Mercosur and the European Union, among others. 
  • Expertise in the private sector, having practiced as an international attorney in São Paulo and New York.
