Federal Government to auction off at least four airports02/06/2015
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff recently took part in a meeting with ministers from the infrastructure area with the aim of establishing the infrastructure investments plan. At the meeting, thirteen ministers and directors of the development bank BNDES, the ‘Caixa Econômica Federal’ and the ‘Banco do Brasil’ discussed measures to stimulate the Brazilian economy.
Without any resources of its own, the core of the plan concerns the expansion of the public concessions program, currently addressing a revision of models in certain sectors. Dilma called for the expansion of a number of airports that are planned for auction. The President ordered her team to increase the number of airports that are to be included in the new program of concessions of public services to the private sector from three to four. As well as the airports serving Salvador, Florianópolis and Porto Alegre, which have already been decided upon, the airports in Recife (PE) and Fortaleza (CE) are also being considered for this new phase in the Dilma Government’s concession plan.
The Government expects the auctions of the airports in Salvador, Florianópolis and Porto Alegre, to take place at the beginning of 2016, considering all the stages of the process (drafting of the tender notices, inquiries, public hearings and approval from the Federal Budget Oversight Board).
According to presidential aids, the decision on which the fourth airport to make up the list will be will depend upon the negotiations that the TAM airline company is holding with the State Governments of Pernambuco and Ceará, to see which can offer the most significant advantages for the installation of a hub.
