On September 15, 2007, the 17th Federal Lower Court in the Federal District of Brasília approved CADE’s sentencing of the Basalto Pedreira e Pavimentação Ltda. company, which will have to pay a fine of approximately US$ 282,000 for having taken part in cartel activities.
Basalto is the fifth company whose sentencing has been backed up by Federal law. Another eleven appeals await decisions.
History. In 2004, CADE sentenced 16 companies operating in the crushed rock industry within the metropolitan region of the State of São Paulo. Taking place in 2003, this was the first case in the history of antitrust in Brazil in which SDE carried out a dawn raid (at the premises of the industry trade association).
